 <ABSTRACT>DURING THE ANNUAL AIR INSPECTION FROM 1 THROUGH 29 AUG 49, THE INSPECTION TEAM, HEADQUARTERS, UNITED STATES AIR FORCE, DEEMED THAT THE MISSION OF  UNITED STATES AIR FORCES IN EUROPE (USAFE) WAS INCOMPLETE SINCE THERE WAS NO INDICATION BY DIRECTIVE OR CORRESPONDENCE AS TO WHAT THE EUROPEAN  COMMAND WOULD EXPECT OF HEADQUARTERS USAFE.  THE DIRECTOR OF REQUIREMENTS WAS REDESIGNATED AS THE DIRECTORATE OF MANPOWER AND REQUIREMENTS EFFECTIVE  20 AUG 49.  THE IMMEDIATE PROBLEM OF THE COMMAND WAS THE PHASEOUT OF THE BERLIN AIRLIFT WITH TWO PHASEOUT SQUADRONS BEING ORGANIZED; THE 7071 ON 1  AUG 49 AT CELLE ROYAL AIR FORCE STATION AND THE 7070 1 SEP 49 AT FASSBERG ROYAL AIR FORCE STATION.  BOTH ORGANIZATIONS WERE ASSIGNED TO 1 AIRLIFT  TASK FORCE.  ON 25 AUG 49, THE FOLLOWING NAVY SQUADRONS THAT HAD WORKED WITH THE AIRLIFT WERE RELIEVED FROM ATTACHMENT TO 1 AIRLIFT TASK FORCE:  AIR  TRANSPORT SQUADRON SIX (VE-6) AND AIR TRANSPORT SQUADRON EIGHT (VE-8).  EFFECTIVE 22 AUG 49, THE COMMANDING GENERAL, 2 AIR DIVISION, ASSUMED COMMAND  JURISDICTION OF THE EXEMPT AIR FORCE INSTALLATION AT LANDSBERG, GERMANY.</ABSTRACT>
